Biography

Sonia Martínez is a Full Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, San Diego and a Jacobs Faculty Scholar. Prof. Martínez received her Ph.D. degree in Engineering Mathematics from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain, in May 2002. Following a year as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Technical University of Catalonia, Spain, she obtained a Postdoctoral Fulbright Fellowship and held appointments at the Coordinated Science Laboratory of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign during 2004, and at the Center for Control, Dynamical systems and Computation (CCDC) of the University of California, Santa Barbara during 2005. From January 2006 to June 2010, she was an Assistant Professor with the department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. From July 2010 to June 2014, she was an Associate Professor with the department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr Martínez' research interests include networked control systems, multi-agent systems, and nonlinear control theory with applications to robotics and cyber-physical systems. In particular, she has focused on the modeling and control of robotic sensor networks, the development of distributed coordination algorithms for groups of autonomous vehicles, and the geometric control of mechanical systems. For her work on the control of underactuated mechanical systems she received the Best Student Paper award at the 2002 IEEE Conference on Decision and Control. She was the recipient of a NSF CAREER Award in 2007. For the paper "Motion coordination with Distributed Information," co-authored with Jorge Cortés and Francesco Bullo, she received the 2008 Control Systems Magazine Outstanding Paper Award. She is a Senior Editor of Automatica and an IEEE Fellow. Recently, she was named the inaugural Editor in Chief of a new Control System Society publication, the IEEE Open Access Control Systems (IEEE OACS) journal.

Biography

Dr. Chakrabortty joined NSF as a program director in August 2020. He is a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, where he is also affiliated with the NSF Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management (FREEDM) Systems Engineering Research Center. His research interests are in areas of Power Systems, Control Systems, Optimization, and Machine Learning, with applications to both transmission-scale and distribution-scale power grids. Over the past twelve years, he has worked extensively in the areas of control and optimization of smart grids, renewable energy integration, cyber-physical systems, and cyber-security. Dr. Chakraborty has built a nationally visible cyber-physical testbed for power system control using real-time digital simulators that has been invited for live demonstrations in national events such as the US-Ignite and the Smart-America Challenge, sponsored by the U.S. White House. He has authored or co-authored more than 160 technical publications in refereed journals and conference proceedings and has published three books. Since joining NC State, he has graduated ten PhD students and has supervised four postdoctoral researchers. Over the past twelve years, his research has been sponsored by NSF, US Department of Energy, ARPA-E, the US Army Research Lab, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and by a variety of power system companies such as Southern California Edison, New York Power Authority, and Duke Energy.

Dr. Chakrabortty is a senior member of IEEE. From 2016 to 2020 he served as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology and currently serves as an editor for IEEE Transactions on Power Systems. He has served in numerous technical program committees for conferences such as American Control Conference (ACC), ICCPS, IEEE SmartgridComm, and IEEE GlobalSIP. He served as the vice-chair for industry and applications for ACC 2016 in Boston, and the vice-chair for invited sessions for ACC 2020 in Philadelphia. He has organized or co-organized several research workshops including the NSF Workshop on Real-time Learning and Decision Making in Dynamical Systems in 2018.

Dr. Chakrabortty received the NSF CAREER award in 2011. At Rensselaer, he was awarded the Allen B. Dumont Prize of 2009 in recognition of the best doctoral thesis by an Electrical Engineering PhD graduate. His research group at NC State has received the best Internet Application in Energy Award from US Ignite in 2013 and 2014. In 2019 he was named a University Faculty Scholar by the NC State Provost's office.

Biography

George Papas earned his B.S. in 1991 and M.S. in 1992 in Computer and Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before coming to Berkeley. While a student at Berkeley, he also served as a graduate fellow in the Division of Applied Sciences at Harvard in 1994. He was the recipient of the Berkeley EECS Eli Jury Award for Excellence in Systems Research in 1999.

Pappas was hired as a professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering (ESE) at the University of Pennsylvania in 2000, with secondary appointments in the Departments of Computer and Information Sciences, and Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics. He served as the Deputy Dean for Research in the School of Engineering and Applied Science from 2008 to 2012, when he was named Chair of the ESE Department. He is a member and former director of the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Lab and a member of the Penn Research In Embedded Computing and Integrated Systems Engineering (PRECISE) Center. His research focuses on control theory and in particular, hybrid systems, embedded systems, hierarchical and distributed control systems, with applications to unmanned aerial vehicles, distributed robotics, green buildings, and biomolecular networks.

Pappas won an NSF Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2004 and became an IEEE Fellow in 2009. He has received numerous awards including the IEEE Control Systems George S. Axelby Outstanding Paper Award in 2009, the IEEE Control Systems Antonio Ruberti Young Researcher Prize in 2010, the American Control Conference O. Hugo Schuck Best Paper Award in both 2014 and 2016, the Penn George H. Heilmeier Faculty Award for Excellence in Research in 2015, the ICRA Best Paper Award in 2017, and the Penn Provost's Award for Distinguished PhD Teaching and Mentoring also in 2017. Pappas was named Fellow of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) in 2019 "for contributions to hybrid and networked control systems with applications to robotics."
